French bulldogs, also known as “Frenchies” have become one of the most desirable dog breeds.

They are cute, affectionate, quirky personality and need minimal exercise. Frenchies are a  brachycephalic breed (also known as “brachy”), meaning they have a shortened muzzle giving the face and nose a pushed-in appearance. Other brachycephalic breeds include Pugs, Cavaliers, Boxers, Bulldogs and Shih Tzu’s.

What does Brachycephalic mean?

Brachycephalic breeds have intentionally been bred to shorten the length of their noses, and thus suffer from the consequential side effects of this breeding. Breeds with flattened noses have a compacted skeleton, resulting in multiple anatomical malformations to the breathing passages.

Although Frenchies are cute, it’s important to do your research so you have an understanding of the costs involved in having a French bulldog and what medical conditions they are predisposed to. Some medical conditions are more serious due to their breathing passage abnormalities, resulting in issues such as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). A dog with BOAS may suffer from exercise intolerance, obesity, increased upper respiratory noises and heat stroke. Surgery can be performed to minimise the clinical signs and open up the airway.

Other medical conditions commonly seen in this breed include ear and skin infections, eye issues, dental disease and spinal disorders. Certain conditions cannot be prevented due to genetics, but pet owners can prepare themselves to help minimise the risk of these conditions occurring.

What to consider if purchasing/owning a Frenchie:

Things you can do to better prepare yourself for a French Bulldog:

  • Do your research - It’s important to have an understanding of what your dog may be predisposed to – the more prepared you are before buying your puppy, the less surprises later.
  • Look into pet insurance! Because Frenchies are susceptible to various health conditions, it’s important to think about insurance that can help cover the cost of unexpected vet bills. Research insurance policies and contact the provider around any questions on limitations and exclusions i.e. pre-existing conditions.
  • Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) surgery – generally most French bulldogs would benefit from BOAS surgery that helps correct the shortening of the soft palate and widening of the nostrils to help increase airflow. There are less complications if the surgery is done when they are younger. Our clinic provides BOAS surgery services. If you have any questions feel free to contact our clinic. More information on BOAS can be read here.
  • Weight management – obesity has been identified as an increased risk factor of IVDD, can cause or worsen joint problems and can also impact their breathing.
