NEW DOG VACCINATION PROTOCOLS AT MARABOON VET

Maraboon Vet Surgery is proud to be Central Highlands first vet clinic to offer a triennial vaccine program. We are committed to being at the forefront of the veterinary research and therefore providing the very best care to your pets. This means less injections, but remaining 100% protected.

We can now administer dogs with a triennial vaccine that will give them protection for the three core viruses (distemper, hepatitis and parvo), which will last 3 years. This allows us to pass on a cost-saving strategy to clients and ensures that pets are only receiving the vaccines they truely need each year. All with a 100% guarantee from the drug company, MSD. We will still need to see your fur-baby every year for an annual check up and for him/her to receive the other vaccinations for respiratory diseases (parainfluenza and bordetella) and heartworm.

QUESTIONS ABOUT VACCINATIONS

Do I need to bring my dog back next year even though it received a triennial vaccination?

Yes, we would love to see your dog the same time next year, and you will receive a text message reminder from us before they are due. We still want to protect your pooch against the respiratory diseases (Bordetella and parainfluenza) which are very common in our area. Unfortunately, these vaccines are still administered yearly. As they are an intranasal vaccine, they stimulate local immunity and thus need to be given annually. On the plus side, they are not an injection therefore the vaccine risk and side effects of any complications is almost zero. Plus, we would love to conduct our yearly check-up on your dog, to ensure their they remain in tip-top shape during the interim.

Why did you make this shift to triennial vaccines?

Vaccinations across the human and pet world have made lots of advances in recent years. Triennial vacicnes have been used in major cities for a few years now, but only recently has the research demonstrated that this protocol is fully guaranteed in high parvo risk areas, such as the Central Highlands. As soon as the research showed this face, we were confident that our patients were going to be safe and so we implemented this change. The Vet industry is always evolving, and we are so thrilled that our vaccine companies were committed to ensuring we are doing right by our patients, and their care givers.

So this is guaranteed to protect my pet?

Yes 100%, we recommend that you give the vaccines a full 7 days before considering them to be 100%
effective.

When is my puppy protected?

7 days after the 10 week vaccination (second puppy vacc) your pets can do 'CONTROLLED SOCIALISING'. This includes Puppy Pre-school, going to Doggy Day Care, or going to your friend’s house that has other fully vaccinated pets. You are able to walk your dog on lead through town, but we recommend sticking to concrete areas as parvo likes to live in the soil. Avoid places like the dog park, botanical gardens or local dams, which are considered high traffic areas for potentially unvaccinated dogs. Following these guidelines for controlled socialisation, your pet will be protected. 7 days after the final vaccination, your puppy is considered 100% protected and is free to go anywhere.

Why are not all vets doing this?

We have spent a lot of time and energy analysing the research and ensuring that this program has both your pet and you the owner, in mind. We can only comment on our commitment to our clients and patients and are not in a place to comment on why other vets use different protocols. But what we can say is that this program is safer, more cost effective for pet owners and less invasive on your pet.

Why is the cost the same every year, even though they don’t get the full vaccines every year?

Our vaccine program has been developed to provide only the core vaccines your pet requires every year. We negotiated with vaccine companies to ensure we got the absolute best price and are passing those savings on to you. Previously the yearly vaccine was $130-$150 and we have reduced that price. Plus a full healthcheck from one of our expereinced vets is still included with every vaccination! So now you are just paying for the yearly core vaccines and triennials are given for the same price if they are due. All while not over vaccinating your pets!
