Who doesn't love puppies!
At Maraboon vet surgery, we offer a fantastic breeding program to assist you and your pets through your breeding journey. Sometimes, like humans, pregnancy and labour can be difficult, not to mention all requirements once the puppies are born. We are here to help with all your questions and concerns about the breeding journey for you and your pet.
There are many different methods used for Breeding dogs. The most common methods include fresh semen, chilled semen and frozen semen breeding. We can do fresh and chilled semen breeding in house and we can assist with frozen semen breeding by helping time the female for insemination. But insemination and storage of semen is done in Rockhampton at Torenbeek Vet Hospital.
Each vet may do things a little differently, however, we use our specific breeding program as it has provided us with very high success rates.
Our specific breeding program begins with a consultation with one of our skilled veterinarians to discuss your pets specific breeding needs. Once your female has begun her heat (day 1 is considered the 1st day of bleeding), progesterone testing will commence at different days of her cycle to determine ovulation and optimal breeding time. Once the optimal breeding time has been determined, breeding will begin. Depending on your chosen method, breeding will occur 2 - 3 times.
We can then ultrasound the female 24 days after the last day of breeding to determine if breeding was successful. A radiograph can then be performed 50-53 days after breeding to do a puppy count and determine the litter size. Some breeds can give birth naturally with minimal complications, however, some breeds including French bulldogs, English bulldogs and other brachycephalic breeds may require a C-section, the date for their C-section can be determined based on the females' progesterone levels and scheduled appropriately.
After birth, all the joys of newborn puppies begin! If you are considering using our services for your breeding journeys, give our wonderful reception team a call on 074987 6800 or book your breeding consultation with one of our amazing vets.
